Event description:

Join the Sports Equity Lab at Yale (SELY) for a film screening of The Rebound, and a discussion with Director Shaina Allen and basketball player Jeremie “Phenom” Thomas. Food will be provided.

The Rebound is an award-winning independent documentary (76 min) following the underdog journey of the Miami Heat Wheels wheelchair basketball team in their quest for their first NWBA National Championship. The cameras don’t stop when the players leave the court: the film follows the athletes through daily life with a disability as they reach for new heights.

From first-time Director and DP Shaina Allen, the movie has screened at more than twenty film festivals and fifty special screenings, received numerous awards, and has been piloted successfully in schools and university research studies.

A bright, optimistic adaptive athlete hailing from South Florida, Jeremie was born prematurely and diagnosed with cerebral palsy and spina bifida due to a prenatal injury. Nevertheless, his single mother and brothers supported aspirations of living an extraordinary life. Steadfast determination allows Jeremie to stand out as he challenges society’s misconceptions of people with disabilities and pushes for his chance in the top ranks of the league, the stage, and the billboard charts.
