I had the opportunity to experience that approach firsthand when I attended one of Ye’s Citizen Developer workshops at Yale School of Medicine. What impressed me most wasn’t her expertise; it was the way she made everyone in the room feel comfortable asking questions, exploring new ideas, and learning together. She has a remarkable ability to make complex topics feel approachable, and it quickly became clear that her greatest strength isn’t simply understanding technology; it’s helping others feel confident enough to embrace it.
As I learned more about Ye’s journey, one thing became clear: she has never stopped learning. Every opportunity has become a chance to explore something new, whether in research, industry, or now at Yale. That curiosity continues to shape the way she approaches her work, the people she works with, and the opportunities she creates for others.
A Journey Guided by Curiosity
Ye’s passion for innovation began while pursuing her Ph.D. in Computer Science at the University of Iowa.
During a seminar on the emerging use of artificial intelligence in breast cancer diagnosis, she saw the potential for technology to support clinicians and improve patient care. That moment sparked a passion that would shape the direction of her career. She later joined a multidisciplinary research team developing computer-aided diagnostic tools for interstitial lung diseases using medical imaging, where she experienced firsthand the power of bringing together experts from different disciplines to solve meaningful healthcare challenges.
Reading this part of Ye’s story resonated with me personally. As a breast cancer survivor, I know how profoundly research and innovation can impact lives. Learning that her early work focused on advancing breast cancer diagnosis made her journey especially meaningful to me. It reminded me that behind every scientific breakthrough are researchers whose curiosity, dedication, and perseverance have the power to improve—and sometimes even save—lives. Their work gives hope to patients and families, and I am grateful to be one of the many people whose life has been touched by scientific discovery.
After completing her doctoral studies, Ye brought her expertise into industry, where she continued turning innovative ideas into practical solutions. At Philips and later Unilever, she led artificial intelligence and data science initiatives, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to solve complex business challenges through technology. Those experiences broadened her perspective and strengthened her ability to translate research into practical solutions that improve the way people work, learn, and solve problems. During this time, she also discovered another passion: mentoring. She enjoyed working with graduate students from institutions including Columbia University and MIT, helping them connect academic research with real-world application.
Looking back, it’s easy to see how those experiences shaped the leader Ye is today. They strengthened not only her technical expertise, but also her belief that the best ideas emerge when people with different perspectives come together around a shared purpose. That collaborative mindset continues to guide the way she approaches every project, partnership, and opportunity to learn at Yale.
Innovation with Purpose
Today, Ye brings together the experiences she gained in academia, industry, and research to help transform teaching and learning at Yale School of Medicine.
One project that beautifully reflects Ye’s approach to innovation is the AI-powered Ambient Feedback Tool. As the primary developer and project lead, she collaborated closely with faculty, educators, learners, and stakeholders to rethink how feedback is delivered in medical education. The platform enables medical students and residents to record clinical education sessions and uses artificial intelligence to generate faculty-style feedback aligned with Yale School of Medicine’s educational goals. By bringing recording, analysis, and feedback into one seamless process, it helps reduce faculty workload while providing learners with timely, personalized feedback that supports their professional growth.
The Ambient Feedback Tool is just one example of Ye’s people-centered approach to innovation. She has also contributed to initiatives such as Curriculum Search, knowledge discovery platforms, and the exploration of extended reality (XR) technologies that enrich medical education. Across every project, the goal remains the same: bringing together people, ideas, and technology to create practical solutions that make a meaningful difference.
When Ye talks about artificial intelligence, she doesn’t describe it as something that replaces people. Instead, she calls it a “thought partner,” a tool that helps us explore ideas, discover new possibilities, and spend more time doing the work that depends on creativity, collaboration, and human connection. That perspective perfectly reflects her philosophy: technology is most impactful when it empowers people to learn, grow, and succeed.
Leading with Confidence and Empathy
Technology is a big part of Ye’s work, but people have always been her focus.
Over the years, she has learned that the best ideas don’t come from technology alone. They come from people who feel heard, respected, and empowered to contribute. While technical expertise creates opportunities, trust, communication, and collaboration are what turn ideas into meaningful results. Those lessons became even more meaningful as Ye built a successful career in English, her second language.
As a non-native English speaker, Ye made a conscious decision not to let language become a barrier. Instead, she challenged herself to speak up, share her ideas, and embrace opportunities that pushed her beyond her comfort zone. Along the way, she discovered that leadership isn’t just about technical knowledge. It’s about listening, communicating with empathy, understanding different perspectives, and building relationships based on trust. Those experiences not only strengthened her confidence but also shaped the way she leads projects, collaborates with colleagues, and mentors others today.
Like many women in STEM, Ye also experienced moments when she had to earn credibility and make sure her voice was heard. Looking back, she doesn’t see those experiences as obstacles. She sees them as opportunities that helped her grow. They strengthened her resilience and reinforced a belief that continues to guide her today: every challenge is an opportunity to learn, and every new experience helps us become better leaders.
That same perspective shapes the advice she shares with women considering careers in STEM. She encourages them to stay curious, seek mentors, continue learning, and have the courage to create opportunities instead of waiting for them. She also reminds them that while technical expertise is important, communication, emotional intelligence, collaboration, and confidence are what transform knowledge into meaningful leadership.
Building Community
For Ye, leadership extends far beyond the workplace. She believes that creating opportunities for people to connect, learn from one another, and feel they belong is just as important as the work itself.
One of the things I admire most about Ye is her commitment to building community. Through our partnership with the Asian Network at Yale (ANY), I’ve had the opportunity to see that collaborative spirit firsthand. As Co-Chair of the Community Engagement Subcommittee, she helps create opportunities for colleagues to connect, celebrate culture, and learn from one another. Whether through newsletters, events, or community initiatives, Ye has a genuine ability to bring people together and create spaces where everyone feels welcomed, valued, and supported. She also volunteers with the New England Asian American Cultural Center, extending that same commitment beyond Yale and into the broader community.
Outside of work, Ye finds joy in another lifelong passion—music. A trained soprano, she has performed at events within the local Chinese community, sharing her love of music with others. Alongside her professional accomplishments, she values family, meaningful relationships, and maintaining a healthy balance between work and life. Those priorities keep her grounded and remind her that success isn’t measured only by what we achieve, but also by the positive impact we have on the people around us.
A Vision for the Future

She believes emerging technologies will continue to transform education and healthcare, but their greatest potential will always depend on the people behind them—those willing to ask thoughtful questions, embrace continuous learning, and work together to solve meaningful challenges. That perspective continues to guide her work as she develops solutions that improve learning experiences, support educators, and encourage others to approach innovation with confidence and curiosity.
Looking ahead, Ye hopes to continue creating technologies that make a meaningful difference while inspiring more women and underrepresented groups to see themselves as innovators, leaders, and lifelong learners. She believes every person brings a unique perspective, and that meaningful progress happens when we create opportunities for one another to learn, contribute, and grow.

As I got to know Ye while working on this feature, one thing became especially clear: she never stops learning—and she brings others along with her. Her story reminds us that shaping the future isn’t just about developing new technologies. It’s also about asking thoughtful questions, embracing new possibilities, sharing what we learn, and creating opportunities for others.
