Event description:

From plastic water bottles and food storage containers, to baby bottles, detergents and makeup, plastics and chemicals are everywhere around us. Professor Anastas will lead a conversation on the impacts that plastics can have on human health and the ecosystems, and the role that they play in society and the environment. He will talk about the chemicals that we use in everyday life, such as personal care products and detergents, and what we as consumers should be aware of in making informed decisions. In addition, Professor Anastas will discuss current efforts on redesigning plastics so they are more sustainable, healthful, and renewable.

Professor Paul Anastas serves as the Director for the Center for Green Chemistry and Green Engineering at Yale. He is an expert in the field of green chemistry, defined as the “design of chemical products and processes that reduce or eliminate the use and generation of hazardous substances.” Professor Anastas was appointed by President Obama as the Assistant Administrator for Research and Development at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and served as its chief scientist from 2009 to 2012. He also has written 15 books on sustainability and science including “Benign by Design” and “Designing Safer Polymers.”
