On November 22, WWN, YVN and the Yale Air Force ROTC hosted a discussion with Dr. Joan Johns-Freese, Professor and the Charles F. Bolden, Jr. Chair of Science, Space & Technology at the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island, US.

Dr. Johns-Freese, discussed UN resolution UNSCR 1325, a landmark resolution on Women, Peace and Security. She explained that the resolution was created to address how women and girls are differentially impacted by conflict and war, and recognizes the critical role that women can and already do play in peacebuilding efforts. The resolution passed in 2000, therefore 2020 will be its 20 year anniversary, and yet so little has been done.

The US has passed a bipartisan law to implement the resolution and in 2017 $4 million was budgeted towards the efforts, but nothing effectual has been done. Dr. Johns-Freese notes that engaging allies from within the armed services to help implement the resolution could have a greater impact. She also suggested that we as constituents contact our Representatives, to push forward the implementation of the resolution.

The discussion was thought-provoking and lead to a lively conversation. The attendees along with Dr. Johns-Freese were engaging and there was a lot of interest in the subject-matter.
